A SIMPLE GUIDE TO BCC FOOD LICENCE APPROVAL

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO BCC FOOD LICENCE APPROVAL

When starting a new food business or expanding your existing business, you will need to understand a little about Council Food Business licencing and how this process works.

STAGE ONE: PREPARING YOUR DESIGN ASSESSMENT

The first stage is understanding Food Safety Standards and documenting your kitchen design for Council. For your Design Assessment application, Council will require;
• Floor Plans
• Internal Elevations
• Mechanical Ventilation Plans
• Site Plans
• Hydraulic Plans

These drawings are best prepared by a retail designer who will consider the service flow of your kitchen and counter areas as well as the type and location of your fixtures and equipment.

Call Alisa Newey from Re:New Design on 0415 199 466 to discuss your needs and give you personalised guidance on Council requirements for the design and fit out of your kitchen.

STAGE TWO: LODGING YOUR DESIGN ASSESSMENT

Work with your Retail Designer to ensure you correctly complete the design assessment application and that you have applied for the required approvals to receive your design assessment.

You can download this application from: http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/sites/default/files/ca10409_food_business_design_application.pdf

You can lodge your application by:

• Either online – https://forms.business.gov.au/aba/qldlg1/ca10409-food-business-design-application/

• OR by Post to:

Brisbane City Council
GPO BOX 1434
Brisbane Qld 4001

• You can also lodge in person at your local Council office.

HOW LONG WILL THE DESIGN ASSESSMENT TAKE?

Unfortunately the time taken for your assessment to be approved can vary from a couple of weeks to a month or more depending on how busy Council are at the time of your lodgement.

To check on the progress of your application once it is lodged, you can call council on (07) 3403 8888.

• Once you have received you Design assessment and other required approvals, you have permission from Council to proceed with your fit out.
• If your Design assessment came back with changes, you will be required to make sure that these changes are met with.

STAGE THREE: FOOD BUSINESS LICENCE APPLICATION

Once construction is completed you will need to contact Council for a final inspection by calling (07) 3403 8888 to make an appointment.

• Council will be making sure that your fit out is constructed as per specifics documented in your Design Assessment and that the layout, equipment and finishes meet with the Food Safety Standards.
• The health officer can ask you to make changes if the fit out does not meet with these standards before issuing your Food Business Licence.
• To avoid changes that may result in delays to opening your business, it is best to consult with a retail designer to ensure all of the Food Safety standards are met.

As part of the Food Business licence you will also need a Food Safety Program for this business. This can be prepared by the business owner or with the assistance of a Hospitality Business Coach.
